This preconference will provide an overview of AI and machine learning and review their current applications and future potential. The participants will (i) explore how AI and machine learning will affect people’s information-seeking activities, (ii) discuss some of the experiments to bring AI into the library context, and (iii) brainstorm more ways in which libraries may utilize AI techniques or AI-powered products to make their collections more accessible, discoverable, and analyzable, their services more effective and user-friendly, and their operations more efficient.

This preconference will also offer a broader look at the socio-economic, political, and ethical challenges that AI presents in the areas of production, labor management, and AI governance. Attendees will be encouraged to think more deeply about what it will or should be like to live, work, and learn in the age of AI.
